Financial reports of the LaFayette Committee, 1825-1826.

The General Assembly of Ala. passed a joint resolution that was approved 1824 Dec. 24, praising General Lafayette and inviting him to visit Ala. The resolution also authorized the governor to draw any sums necessary from the state treasury to finance the reception for Lafayette. A committee was formed to make preparations for Lafayette's 1825 visit. The committee spared little expense and eventually drew over $17,000 from the state treasury to finance the visit. This sum exceeded available revenues and caused an act to be approved 1826 Jan. 14 authorizing an additional $4,000 to be appropriated for the final settlement of accounts. This series consists of itemized receipts and disbursements of the committee and correspondence regarding the committee's accounts. Included are costs of transporting LaFayette from the state of Ga. to Montgomery and bills detailing entertainment expenses for receptions and activities held in Montgomery, Cahaba and Mobile. Items of special interest include costs to paint the state house at Cahaba and burial costs for a New Orleans musician who died during the festivities in Montgomery.
